South African men’s duo qualifies for the Olympics – Beach Volleyball

Following a close competition with duos from Angola, the South African men secured the Olympic slot via CAVB Continental Beach Volleyball Cup. The final phase of the African Continental Cup received a total of 12 teams from six countries.

South Africa took part in the competition with duos of GOLDSCHMIT/CHIVA and FREDERICKS/WILLIAMS.  According to the set formula of the competition, the finalists of the competition played four matches. South Africa pulled off success in the opening affair but dropped the next two matches. However, Angola also suffered the set-back in fourth match and dropped the decision. Ironically, the game score tied after four matches.

The two sides were then forced to play the 15-point golden set. The final flight of the competition featured GOLDSCHMIT/CHIVA of South Africa and Angola’s SEQUEIRA/SEQUEIRA. The South African pair proved to be better and claimed the decisive golden set.

South Africa won the final showdown of CAVB Men’s Continental Beach Volleyball Cup and became the first African country to qualify for 2012 London Olympics.
