Thailand beats Cuba but fails to secure the Olympic berth – Volleyball news

The trio of Onuma Sittirak, Wilavan Apinyapong, and Pleumjit Thinkaow led Thailand to a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-21) victory against Cuba on Sunday as two teams played their last match of 2012 FIVB Women’s World Olympic Qualification Tournament.

Tokyo Metropolitan Gym in Japan set up the field of play and around 1,450 spectators showed up. Thailand put up a valiant effort to make it to the 2012 London Olympics but failed to succeed on account of low set ratio.

Japan and Thailand finished the Olympic Qualifiers with overall 4-3 record but the hosts went ahead as they had more set wins to their tally. Nonetheless, Thailand kept its hopes alive until the final decision and displayed a stellar performance against Caribbean team in the last match.

Top-gun of Thailand Sittirak settled for the position of top-scorer with match-high 20 points. She was followed by Apinyapong and Thinkaow, who added 17 and 16 points respectively.
On Cuban side, Yoana Palacios registered 16 points whereas Yanelis Santos tallied 15 in the failing effort.
